即使在繪本源起的西方，它的概念至今也并未有統一的定論。
繪本是源自日文的習慣，繪本在英文中是PictureBook（圖畫書）。在我國臺灣地區，圖畫書與繪本常常被混用，繪本用于較為嚴格意義的圖畫故事書，而圖畫書的界定有時相當寬泛，甚至包括非虛構的知識類圖畫書、玩具書、歌謠等。
繪本不等于“有畫的書”，它是一種獨立的圖書形式，特別強調文與圖的內在關系。文字與圖畫共同擔當講故事的重要角色，圖畫不再僅僅起輔助和詮釋文字的作用。
一些相當著名的繪本甚至只有圖，而完全沒有文字。不過也有許多繪本是在圖、文之間取得一種平衡的關系，相互襯托，營造出整個繪本的感覺出來。
繪本實際上包括兒童繪本和成人繪本兩種類型，但二者之間的界限不是很明確。 一般認為，現代意義上的繪本（圖畫書）誕生于19世紀后半葉的歐美，凱迪克、格林納威、波特都是早期的杰出代表。
在亞洲，日本的繪本從20世紀50年代開始起步，至70年代崛起，目前已成為繪本的泱泱大國。我國臺灣地區繪本大致從20世紀60年代后期開始起步，至80年代后漸入佳境。
兒童繪本是兒童文學的一環，它的主要閱讀對像是學齡前后的幼兒。 圖像是幼兒重要的閱讀工具，也是繪本最重要的組成部份。
繪本的圖像除了要貼近兒童的世界，也必須重視美感呈現。好的繪本，每張圖像都會說話，圖與圖之間呈現獨特的敘事關系，兒童得以由直覺進入繪本的世界，自然流暢地聽故事。
由于幼兒識字不多，不能獨立閱讀，所以繪本的文字，便須要大人代為關讀，再說給小讀者聽。 也就是說，繪本的文字并不是寫給小讀者看的，而是讓他們聽的。
繪本的圖像和文字必須韻含默契，像呼吸、像音樂、像雙打運動員般緊密配合，方能讓小讀者輕松愉快地閱讀。 幼兒對外在世界的認識，是從整體來掌握感覺，而非由細部思考分析的。

因此，大人與小孩一起閱讀繪本時，不要先讀文字，要讓他們先看圖畫。 預留空間，讓孩子的想象馳騁，掌握繪本的整體意境。
在誦讀文字的時候，我們應忠于原味，既不偷工減料，也不加油添醋。 這樣，小孩才可以體會到繪本的文學及秩序之美，掌握繪本的整體意境。
繪本為小孩提供豐富的體驗，體驗到的感受經過時間沉淀，便會慢慢化為知識和智能。 在閱讀之后，大人應避免說教，急不及待地說明、詢問、考試。
