國王安菲特律翁從盲人占卜者的口中知道兒子天賦極高，他決心讓兒子享受配做一個英雄的教育。他聘請了各地英雄給年輕的赫拉克勒斯傳授種種本領。
他親自教他駕駛戰車的本領；俄卡利亞國王歐律托斯教他拉弓射箭；哈耳珀律庫斯教他角斗和拳擊；刻莫爾庫斯教他彈琴唱歌。宙斯的雙生子之一卡斯托耳教他全副武裝地在野外作戰；阿波羅的兒子，白發蒼蒼的里諾斯教他讀書識字。
赫拉克勒斯顯示了學習的天賦和才能。可是他不能忍受折磨，而年老的里諾斯又是一個缺乏耐心的教師。
有一次，他無端責打赫拉克勒斯。赫拉克勒斯順手抓起他的豎琴，朝老師頭上扔去，他即刻倒地身亡。
赫拉克勒斯十分后悔，但他仍被傳到法庭。為人正直而又知識淵博的法官拉達曼提斯宣布他無罪。
法官頒布了一條新法，即由于自衛而打死人者無罪。可是安菲特律翁擔心力大無窮的兒子以后還會犯下類似的罪過，所以把他送到鄉下去放牛。
赫拉克勒斯在這里過了一年又一年，長得又高又強壯。他身高一丈多，雙眼炯炯有神，猶如閃爍的炭火。
他善騎會射，射箭或投槍都能百發百中。當他18歲時，已長成希臘最英俊、最強壯的男子漢。
他面臨著命運的挑戰，現在是看看他一身武藝和力量是用來造福還是作惡的時候了。 赫拉克勒斯離開了牧人和牛群，來到一塊寂靜的地方，思考他的人生道路到底該怎樣選擇。
突然，他看到兩位高貴的婦女迎面走來。一位女子儀態萬千，高貴而純潔，目光謙和，舉止有禮，穿一身潔白的長袍。
另一位雍容華貴，雪白的肌膚抹了香粉和香水，姿態端正，使她顯得比實際的要高一些。她的目光直視前方，衣服穿得得體，顯出無限魅力。
她自我欣賞一番，又顧盼自如，看看有沒有人在仰慕地打量她。當她們走近時，后一位女子搶前幾步，趕在第一位女子前面，朝著英俊的赫拉克勒斯走過來，打著招呼說：“赫拉克勒斯，我看得出，你還在猶豫不決，不知選擇怎樣的生活。
