現在，在英語課堂上用英語教英語已成為共識。
但在與學生通過書面表達方式進行交流時，多數教師往往只看到評語的評價功能，卻忽略評語的語言示范功能與交際功能。例如，很多英語教師在批改作業時，除了打上一些“錯”或“對”的符號外，鮮有能像中文教師那樣，在學生的作業本子上寫上自己對學生作業比較具體和明確的看法或意見的。
其實，教師的評語，是對學生英語書面表達能力和自主學習情況的評價和指導。我們用英語授課，在培訓學生的口語方面已“身先士卒”，做出了表率，讓學生在英語交際的海洋里學習游泳。
現在，若我們用英語寫評語，就可以使學生在書面語的培訓方面也同樣“下水”了，讓學生在真實的英語交際環境中，書面語能力也得到提高。實際上，教師為學生的英語作業寫評語，不僅有利于提高學生的英語書面交際能力，而且有利于促進師生的知識、思想和情感的交流，還有利于提高學生自主學習的積極性。
下面筆者就如何寫英語評語的問題，談一點看法和體會。1.適應性首先，給學生寫作業評語必須具有適應性：教師寫的評語是給學生看的，所以必須使用學生能看得懂的英語來寫，要切合學生的實際，符合學生的個性心理發展。
也就是說教師在學生作業上的評語所使用的詞匯和語法知識不能過高或過低于學生的現有水平。其次，應做到循序漸進：由簡到繁、由易到難、由一般化到個性化。
這兩條是寫好英語作業評語的前提。當然評語中偶爾可以有幾個生詞。
有時候學生通過上下文的猜測就能理解，或者通過查閱字典來解決也能對學生有好處。這樣做，有時甚至還能起到“努力一跳，搞到桃子”的促進作用。

也就是說教師如盡早地批改學生的作業，就能及時了解學生的學習進步狀況及學習效果，以便掌握情況進行指導。其次，學生在做作業時，會遇到這樣那樣一些特殊的問題和想法，他們在急切地盼望著老師的評價和指導，所以，教師應急學生之所急，及時地給予恰當的評價。
（2）及時地應用學生新近學到的一些語法知識和詞匯來寫評語。這樣做有助于學生對新知識加深理解和強化記憶，最起碼也可以讓學生看到一次知識運用的實例。

學生們都是渴望成功的，成功的動機是一種巨大的情緒力量，它能使學生產生主動求知的心理沖動，這在做作業中也會表現出來。因此，教師在給學生布置作業時應注意盡量少一些千遍一律的抄寫題，多一些可適當自由發揮的題目或問題，讓不同程度和有不同愛好的學生都有自己發揮想象的空間和提出不同觀點的機會，然后不失時機地給予表揚或鼓勵的評語。
