蘇東坡，名軾，四川眉山人。
他在北宋元豐年間，曾先后三次來到宜興，對陽羨山水懷有眷戀之情。
他看到獨山峰巒如黛，清溪縈繞的迷人景色，曾感慨地說：“此山似蜀”。

宜興人為了紀念蘇東坡，就將獨山改名為“蜀山”，并在東坡講學處建造“似蜀堂”。
明天順年年間，宜興人工部侍郎沈暉建筑造了“東坡書院”，占地三十多畝，講堂六楹，中立蘇軾像，每月朔望講學，清康熙、乾隆間都曾修葺，后毀于咸豐太平軍之役，同治八年重建，光緒八年再修，每逢東坡誕辰舉行紀念活動。
1983年，丁蜀鎮政府再修東坡書院。
