孟姜女的故事能夠追溯到《左傳》，齊國有位叫杞粱的將領在戰役中陣亡，齊莊公沒有參與追悼會，而是派欽差去吊唁，但是這引起了杞梁妻的不滿，她認為自個的老公有功于國，齊莊公不參與吊唁是對勇士的不尊敬，因此回絕發喪。
齊莊公很感動，親自到杞梁家中參與了追悼會并致了悼文，還把杞梁厚葬在國都郊外。這是孟姜女的前史原型，也是實在的前史事件。
西漢末年，劉向在《烈女傳》中為了烘托烈女，增加了哭夫和城倒情節。
據史料記載，孟姜女并不姓孟而姓姜，孟姜女也不單指某一人，而是對其時的世族之妻或貴族女子的通稱。古代時，大家習慣于用“伯（孟）、仲、叔、季”等記載朋友數人的長幼，起姓名時，也慣用此法，“伯”是老邁，“仲”是老二，如孔子排行老二，字曰仲尼。
“伯仲”，常被比方相差不多，難分高下，成語“難分伯仲、伯仲之間”即是這個意思。古代待嫁女子也是如此排行，如伯姬、叔姬之類。古代還有“嫡長為伯，庶長為孟”之說。孟姜女，其實即是指姜家庶出的長女，這種風俗起至西周，在中國已有兩千多年的前史。
出于對孟姜女的敬仰，全國各地許多地方建有孟姜女廟，而山海關孟姜女廟則以其古樸典雅，依關面海別具一格。更以其前殿那副海水朝朝朝朝朝朝朝落浮云長長長長長長長消的著名對聯而名聞天下。
這副對聯相傳是南宋狀元王十朋所撰。它利用中國漢字一字多音，一字多義的特點，疊音疊義，描繪了海潮漲落，浮云長消的自然景象，顯示了自然界變幻多姿的景色，讀后使人產生無限遐想：是自然？或亦是人生！
